YOUR Verbal Manifesto
I know, the title itself seems… well word-y and boring. So I’ll tell you how I stumbled onto this little diddy.
For those of you who don’t know, I grew up as a competitive gymnast. When I say that, I mean the Kerri Strug-vault with a broken ankle style. I spent at LEAST 30 hours in the gym when I was 10 years old. I spent most of my energy and time trying to be the best of the best, with a goal of being an Olympic Gymnast. You can imagine that might create some deep stories in the psyche about success and instant results.
I have been uncovering some deep beliefs that stemmed from never being or performing perfectly or the way my coaches wanted. After trying a routine or trick on bars with no success, giving up was the option. So little by little I reinforced the fact that I tried something as hard as I could a ton of times and if it didn’t work, then give up.
Welp, you can see the tie in to the title ;)
WARNING!! The first sentence following is full of anatomy rich lingo! The striatum and orbitofrontal cortex are said to be the part of the brain connected with motivation. The stria-what?!?!?!
That’s right, there’s not only 1, but at least 2 parts of YOUR brain specifically focused around success and motivation. Did you know that Thomas Edison failed at least 30 times before he made his desire a reality?
So, how do you develop and unwavering desire for success?
One way that has been proven successful is by using something called ‘Autosuggestion’. This involves talking to yourself firmly on a daily basis. You need to tell yourself what you want and demand action from yourself. And tell yourself that you’re going to develop confidence in yourself. That you won’t stop trying until you get what you want.
HOW do you do this you ask???
Create a plan (yes now ;) and recite it to yourself at least twice a day. One thing to note here, is that our brains will come up with allll sorts of commentary to get you to NOT do this or follow through. I’ll even bet it will say things like “this is so dumb” or “this isn’t doing anything”. That, my friend, is called resistance. It only means you’re on to some juicy growth!
You control your thoughts!
You tell yourself what you want, the more specific the better! You write all of these magical things down and you recite it to yourself at least twice a day. THIS is your verbal manifesto baby! Before long your desire will grow to levels that cannot be knocked down by small little roadblocks. Give yourself demands. Tell yourself you’re going to be confident in your ideas and actions, and you won’t stop when things get tough.
