The "In-Between" Blues: Grounding Your Nervous System

Focus: Chiropractic & Functional Medicine

It’s late April in Minnesota, and we are all suffering from "Seasonal Whiplash." One day it’s 65 and we’re dreaming of the garden; the next, it’s 48, gray, and damp. This "on-again, off-again" spring is actually incredibly taxing on your nervous system. Your body wants to expand and bloom, but the cold makes you subconsciously hunch your shoulders to your ears and clench your jaw.

When we live in this state of "bracing," our spinal alignment takes a hit. We get those "cold-weather kinks" in our necks just when we should be feeling fluid. From a functional medicine perspective, this lack of sunlight and constant temperature fluctuation can keep our cortisol levels spiked, leaving us feeling "tired but wired."

Hippie Tip: Don’t pack away the flannel just yet. Your nervous system needs to feel safe to shift out of winter mode. Use a heating pad on your low back (your adrenal centers) while you sip herbal tea. Come in for an adjustment to unlock the physical tension of spring-bracing, and let’s remind your body that even if the weather is indecisive, your inner foundation can be steady.
