Summer Solstice Energy: Honoring Your Inner Sun
We are right on the cusp of the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year and the peak of the season. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this is the time of maximum Yang energy (vibrant, expressive, expansive, and full of brilliant light). Nature is in full bloom, and our spirits naturally want to match that outward, social rhythm. This season belongs entirely to the Fire element, which directly governs the Heart and its energetic partner, the Small Intestine.
In TCM, the Heart is considered the "Emperor" of the entire body, hosting our Shen (our spirit, consciousness, and emotional well-being). When the Fire element is balanced, we feel joyful, connected, creative, and sleep peacefully. However, because June brings such intense, fast-moving energy, it is incredibly easy for our internal fire to turn into a full-blown wildfire. If you find yourself feeling anxious, suffering from an overactive busy brain at 2:00 AM, experiencing night sweats, or feeling an undercurrent of restlessness, your Emperor is likely overheating.
Acupuncture during the solstice is all about introducing cool and harmony. By gently placing needles along the Heart and Pericardium meridians, we act as an energetic pressure-relief valve. We can clear that excess heat from the nervous system, lower your heart rate, and ground your energetic field so you can enjoy the magic of summer without burning your candle at both ends.
Hippie Tip: Solstice energy wants you to do everything, but your spirit requires stillness to stay sane. Feed your heart with community and laughter, but schedule sacred cool down periods. Sit by a local lake at dusk and watch the water mirror the sky (water naturally tames excess fire). Sip on iced hibiscus or warm chrysanthemum tea, both of which are traditional Chinese herbs used to clear summer heat and pacify a restless spirit.
